After severe storms brought down the Interstate Sports Dome in Tinley Park on July 27, 2026, the facility is working toward a comeback. The Village projects a November opening for indoor sports and a December opening for its restaurant. Here is what is planned for the 191st Street complex, what officials said about the collapse, and what remains to be confirmed.

If you've driven along 191st Street or Interstate 80 in Tinley Park, you've probably noticed the enormous sports dome taking shape near Panduit Drive.

For a while this summer, it was hard to miss. Then, on July 27, a powerful storm brought the air-supported structure down.

Now the project is preparing for another attempt at opening. According to the Village of Tinley Park's September 2026 project update, the Interstate Sports Dome is targeting November 2026 for its athletic facilities, with an adjoining restaurant expected to follow in December 2026.

Those are projected opening windows, not confirmed grand-opening dates.

The Storm That Brought Down the Dome

The main dome had first been inflated in June 2026, marking a major milestone for the complex under construction at 7600 W. 191st Street.

But on July 27, 2026, severe storms tore through the southwest suburbs. The dome collapsed during the storm, before the facility had opened to the public. The operator reported that no one was injured.

The National Weather Service's storm report documents widespread damaging winds that day, including a report of the sports dome collapsing near 191st Street and 76th Avenue. The weather service reported especially severe straight-line winds in and around Tinley Park and other southern suburbs.

The collapse left a big question for anyone who had watched the project rise: Why did an enormous indoor sports dome come down, and could it happen again?

What Village Staff Said About the Collapse

The issue came up at Tinley Park's August 20, 2026 Plan Commission meeting, when Acting Chair Steve Sepessy asked about the cause and whether the same thing could happen in the future.

According to the meeting discussion reviewed for this article, Planning Manager Mark Herman said the facility was not finished and had not yet received occupancy approval. He suggested that unfinished structural components or doors and airlocks might have contributed to the dome's vulnerability during the storm.

There is an important distinction here: Herman also acknowledged that he did not know the exact technical details. His explanation was a staff comment during a public meeting, not a published engineering finding that identified a definitive cause.

Herman said a completed dome, with systems installed according to approved plans, should not experience the same problem. That was an expectation, not a guarantee that severe weather could never damage an air-supported structure.

For residents and future visitors, the practical questions are whether repairs are complete, required air-supported systems are functioning properly, and the facility has obtained the necessary approvals before opening.

When Will the Interstate Sports Dome Open?

The Village's latest posted development timeline gives two separate targets:

  • Indoor sports facility: November 2026.
  • Restaurant: December 2026.

Municipal meeting updates in September described work toward re-inflating the dome, but I have not independently confirmed that re-inflation is complete or that a final certificate of occupancy has been issued as of this article's October 2026 update.

The facility's official website is advertising sports programs and rentals, and identifies November 2026 as an opening target. Check the operator directly for current booking and opening information rather than relying on a projected month.

What's Planned Inside the Dome?

The site is planned as a sizable indoor sports and entertainment destination, rather than a single playing field under a fabric roof.

The Village's development description lists a roughly 142,000-square-foot main dome, an additional 35,000-square-foot supplemental dome, and an approximately 18,000-square-foot support building. These are planned project components; the smaller dome should not be treated as an operating amenity until its phase and completion are confirmed.

The operator is currently promoting multiple ways to use the complex, including:

  • Indoor multipurpose sports fields and team rentals.
  • Baseball and softball training and batting cages.
  • Pickleball courts, reservations and programming.
  • Athletic performance and pitching instruction.
  • Group rentals, tournaments and private events.

The facility website currently describes six multipurpose fields, 14 batting cages and six pickleball courts. The exact mix and availability of programs can change as the facility opens in phases.

There's a Restaurant Planned, Too

The development includes a dining and gathering component in its support building.

The operator's website currently advertises TK's Clubhouse Bar & Grill, promoting food, drinks and space for team gatherings and other events. Earlier Village liquor-license records referred to the restaurant as "The Clubhouse Pizzeria Bar & Grill." The difference appears in the records and public-facing marketing; the operator's current name is the more useful one for visitors, but the final operating name should be reconfirmed at opening.

Tinley Park's September update targets December 2026 for the restaurant, separate from the November athletic-facility target.

A Setback, but Not the End of the Project

For months, the sports dome has been one of the most visible new projects along Tinley Park's 191st Street corridor.

The July storm was a major setback, especially for a facility that had only recently been inflated. But the Village and operator are still pointing toward a November launch for athletics and a December target for dining.

As those dates get closer, the most useful updates will be confirmation that the dome is back up, that the required approvals are in place, and that leagues, rentals and restaurant service are actually available.

I'll keep this page updated as the facility moves from construction to operation. Once it is open, the current programs, amenities and visitor information will take priority, with the unusual 2026 storm story preserved as part of its history.
